This tutorial shows how to setup a CAT and digital modes interfaces in the MixW,just by using a single serial port on the pc.

So far I 've been using two separate COM ports, one for each interface, but not long ago I found the way to enable both options from a single serial port,or from an USB-232 adapter,if a traditional serial port is not available.

The software configuration, shown below,is pretty simple, while some rewiring of the 9 pin serial connector may be required, since the two interfaces will now share the same COM port, usually the pins DTR,RTS,GND for the digital modes interface, and the pins TXD,RXD,GND for the CAT.

This won't be an issue if the interface includes both circuits (CAT & digimodes) on one single device (link to the Yaesu FT817 interface),if not,the serial cable from each one of them will have to be hooked up to the same 9 pin female connector,as described before.

from the main menu in MixW,select HARDWARE

select CAT SETTINGS

In the CAT field, select the manufacturer of the radio

In the  MODEL field, select the radio model

select DETAILS

a new window will open, where the operating parameters of the serial port will be defined

In the PORT field, select the COM port

NOTE

the ports aknowledged by MixW (available ports) will be marked with an asterisk

 In the fields

BAUD RATE,

DATA BITS,

PARITY,

STOP BITS

enter the chosen parameters of the CAT connection

NOTE

the same parameters must be entered in the radio, check on the manual that comes with the transceiver what is proper way to do it

The fields RTS and DTR  will define how the activate the PTT on the radio.

It will be possible to setup a second output as well, usually connected to the CW key input,if the interface comes with it

as shown in the picture,it will be possible to choose one of the following activation options for the pin RTS :

PTT

it will put the radio in TX mode every time the MixW goes on TX

CW

if the interface comes with the CW output, selecting this option will allow CW transmission from MixW

ALWAYS ON

the pin will be ON all the time, this function in used if the interface is powered from the serial port

ALWAYS OFF

the pin will be OFF all the time

CW+PTT

the same pin willl be activated either for the PTT and CW,this function can be enabled if the interface has a single, switchable output

once the configuration of the port is complete, close the window selecting OK

make sure that the option DISABLED is not checked, otherwise the port will not work

verify that the remaining options (see the red arrows) are not checked, except AFSK IN PLACE OF FSK.

Close the window selecting OK

from the main MixW menu, select HARDWARE again and double check that there are no check marks on the DISABLE CAT option,as shown in the picture A

If not,as shown in the picture B,the port will not work

Now the CAT should be working,as well as the PTT.

Verify that any change done on the tuning bar of MixW is reflected on the radio and in the log of the program.

After, with some short test transmissions,it will be possible to test the PTT circuit.
